Mirroring is Technology in which Data will be replicated to another disk and in case there is disk failure you can retrieve your data from another disk which was as mirror copy. This technology is widely used in the industry to overcome disk failure.
In this example we need to do Storage Migration from Operating System (OS) end, you may ask what exactly happening in the Storage Migration and why it is needed?
In this scenario volumes are on a production box they are on DMX Storage boxes and now there is enhancement from the storage end. They are moving to VMAX Storage boxes and now we need to migrate volumes to the new storage. So in the process they will allocate some new devices from VMAX Storage boxes and we will perform Mirroring from OS end with the help of VEA (Veritas Enterprise Administrator).
Once new devices are allocated on the server you need to open VEA
Go to run and type VEA then enter
Then VEA console will open and you need put localhost or server name which you want connect to and once the console is connected to the server which you want to manage.
Then you need to go to action and select rescan or you can run a command vxassist rescan from command prompt.
Once the rescan is completed you see new devices in the disks section and they shows without signature.
Then you right click on a disk and write signature during this phase it will right the Partition table as well on the disks
Now after adding the signature on the new devices they will look like as below image
Now as we have prepared the devices and they have Veritas proprietary signature on the disks, we will add them to the Dynamic Group (DG) where the volume is residing.
A wizard will open and click next
You need to select the disks which you want add to the DG for mirroring
After adding the disks then click next
After that it will show the summary devices will be update and click next
Now you can see new dives are successfully added in the DG
Now select the volume and right click on it
Go to mirror option and click Add
Now in the section you need to choose the Layout, options are Concatenated / Stripped. We will use concatenated layout its equal to spanned volume.
Note: more complex layout you choose from OS end more I/O operations will increase and that can be the reason of performance degrades of that volume.
Select Auto disks or manual, I would suggest better is Manual which reduce mistakes in complex environment.
Click ok, mirror operation triggered
You can run command “vxtask list “from command prompt to list the current tasks in progress and its show the percentage as well.
In this Disk view you can see the volume status which is in re-syncing
Now in this Plex view mirror copy is attaching
Now to check the progress
After completion – Plex Veiw
To remove the old copy, you need select the old copy and right click and click remove
It will prompt for the confirmation
After removal Plex Veiw – Old copy is not visible
In the disk view old devices are released from the volume
You need select the DG and right click on it and click remove devices which are not in use
It will list the devices while removing and select them and click Ok
Now in the disk view above disks are released from DG successfully
