We will see How to Migrate VM with Storage vMotion? Lets give me a brief about Storage vMotion and Why We need to Use Storage VMotion? Then we will move on with the steps migrate virtual machine with Storage vMotion.
What is Storage VMotion?
Storage VMotion is Storage VMotion and in this process we do migrate virtual machines files (configuration files) and disks (vmdk files) from one Datastore to another Datastore Online with Zero Downtime.
Why we need to Use Storage VMotion?
- Migrating from Old storage to new storage systems or migrating to different vendor storage without downtime to VM’s.
- Performing Scheduled activity like storage upgrades on the source Datastore (which is made of external Storage LUN).
- Converting VM disk type from Thick to Thin and Thin to Thick.
- Migrating the critical virtual machines to high performance storage arrays to improve performance of virtual Machine.
There are many more scenarios these above are few examples
Today we have faced an issue were our datastore sending alert as Datastore is about to out of space and we need to create some space on those datastore’s which are sending alerts. This another good example were we can use Storage vMotion to create some space on datastore by moving virtual machines (vm) from one datastore to another. So lets see how we can do that…?
Hope you are logged into virtual center and navigated from Datacenter to Cluster to a ESX Server or a ESX Host
After this you need to select configuration and then to storage
In the above image we can see the Datastores
Lets sort the Datastores with a free space and we can see two above datastores are generating the alerts and we need to create space for them…
Lets pick a VM which is located inside that Datastore and right click on it and click migrate
Another wizard will open and lets select change datastore and click next
Notice on this image we are picking up the datastore which has space in it were we can move the vm from source datastore which is out of space.
Also note if your vm machine is having larger disks and you need move the vmdk to two separate datastore then we need click advance option to do the Storage vMotion.
another tab will open and in this we can see we can redirect the configuration files and disk files to different datastore, lets see how we can do that …
In a image you can see how we can pick a different datatores for configuration files or a disk files of vm – after you set it up click ok and click next
Now you will see the summary whatever we have selected and now we can move on with a Storage vMotion – Hope this is informative for you and you can put your queries and comments
Thanks for being there
